Public-use electric vehicle charging infrastructure will soon be live in Banbury.
10 EV bays are currently being installed in Windsor Street car park. The hubs are part of the Park and Charge Oxfordshire programme - a Council-led initiative to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure locally. Up to 125 dual connection electric vehicle chargers will be installed in 24 Council-owned car parks across the county, including six in the Cherwell District, in one of the first projects of its kind in the UK.
The chargers will provide battery top-ups to visitors during the day as well as a safe solution for residents without access to off-street parking to charge their EVs overnight.
They are suitable for all makes of electric vehicles with both ‘tethered’ and ‘socketed’ chargers provided in each location which means all EV drivers can use them whether they have Type 1 or Type 2 connections.
The £5.4 million rollout is being delivered in partnership with Bicester-based Zeta Specialist Lighting Ltd who designed and manufactured the chargers so it is truly a local green project.
Banbury Conservatives said: “We are pleased to see EV charging infrastructure come to Banbury. We know that more and more people are making the switch to electric vehicles so it is important that we increase the number of charging facilities available locally. We look forward to seeing the bays be well-used when they go live shortly.”
In addition to the 10 bays in Windsor Street, a further 12 chargers are set to be installed in Calthorpe Street West car park later this year.
