Thanks to the combined efforts of residents and local Councils, Oxfordshire has again been named the best performing Council area for recycling rates in England.
This is the eighth consecutive year that Oxfordshire has topped the national leaderboard for recycling and composting.
Last year, residents recycled or composted 0.7% more of their household waste than in the previous year. Overall, 59.5% of household waste was recycled and composted in Oxfordshire last year, compared to 58.8% the previous year. The national average was just 44% according to the latest figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Banbury and Bicester Conservatives said: “Cherwell District Council provides a comprehensive range of recycling services, operating kerbside collections which Oxfordshire County Council then dispose of, but it is only through residents doing their bit that we are able to perform so well. The national average recycling rate actually went down in 2021 but Oxfordshire’s rate went up which is a testament to residents, our brilliant collection crews, and the waste management teams at our local Councils.”
