Banbury has been confirmed as runner up in the Town Centre category of this years’ Great British High Street competition.
It comes after a successful campaign supported by Cherwell District Council, Banbury Town Council, Banbury Old Town Association, and a host of independent business owners and community groups. From an initial pool of over 900 entries, Banbury made the final three. At the awards ceremony at Lancaster House on Monday 12 December, Banbury was named runner-up with special commendation for its successful pop-up initiatives and the town’s thriving independent retail community. The win went to Blackburn.
Of Banbury’s huge achievement, Banbury Conservatives said: “We are incredibly proud of Banbury’s effort in the Great British High Street Awards. While we are disappointed Banbury did not take home the top prize, it is a great reflection of the hard work that is being done by local Councils, businesses, and community organisations to promote excellence on our High Street, from events to pop-ups, independent traders and partnership working.
We really did put our best foot forward. And against some tough competition.
We would like to thank everyone who voted for Banbury, as well as the town's retailers, employees, and volunteers who continue to work tirelessly day in and day out to make Banbury the thriving market town it is. We sincerely hope that the positivity the Awards have brought to the town will continue to be harnessed. We will certainly keep on making every effort to continue ensuring Banbury remains a vibrant town for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.”
